Misunderstandings and The Golden Rule

Recently I reconnected with someone from my past. This was someone that I knew, but had not known well at the time. Over the course of several days we had some very profound conversations and shared some very restless secrets. A friendship was developing. But eventually we had a misunderstanding. I was dismayed and saddened that someone with such a dark, bleak past would be so intolerant or judgmental of a single thing that I had said that they misunderstood in the first place. I would have thought that there was enough respect for the friendship to delve deeper for understanding. It turns out that the friendship appears to have been disposable. This has had me thinking about times past when I might have misunderstood someone. We are all products of our own experiences and therefore our understanding and how we process information is based on those experiences. I have looked back at the times when I may have been harsh in judging someone and intolerant despite my own history and mistakes. We should all try to be tolerant and respectful of one another. Until you’ve walked in another person’s shoes then you cannot truly understand them. The golden rule is to treat others the way that we want to be treated not the way that we have been treated.

Until next time, Live Authentic. Live Intentional. Pursue your dream. Live with purpose.
